ok, so in religion class, we were given a situation. our friend comes up to us and tells us he's gay. you are the only one who knows, but he plans to tell his parents soon. you have a feeling it's going to get out some how.
what advice would you give him?
would you still be friends with him?
would your friendship change?
would you be worried about how people looked at you for being close to a gay person?
well our teacher kinda guides our class so its not too randome. most people said they would tell the kid to be himself and not to take shit from people. they also said they'd have his back as long as he dident hit on them. there friendship probably wouldent change, except no sleepovers (that was a joke i think). they wouldent be worried about other peoples oppinions.
that all bs. i know most kids in my class. they would stop talking to this kid, make fun of him behind his back, and never be seen with him again.
the teacher then said imagine it was you who was gay. haha i kinda liked this part.
would you tell anyone you were gay that goes to our school. its an all guys school.
most people said no, theyd hide it. i fit in for once because i agreed haha.
our teacher then said statisticly there are 2 gay guys in this class right now. wow i might not be alone haha. John starts poking me. he started laughing and sayin stuff to me. i knew it was all a joke about me or other people. he then saw we were all looking at one another and said there may also be none.
speaking of "gay" has anyone ever noticed that the word gay now has 3 meanings? 1. happy 2. homosexual 3. stupid/idiot
it seems everyone uses it as an insult, normaly not meaning to offend or refuring to sexuality. personaly, im never offended when somone says somthings gay. i say it alot too. i know i shouldent but its like cussing, it just comes out.
do you guys ever get offended when somone says that?
Peace!

In my youth, the slur was 'Homo' or 'Queer' or a variety of other, more creative insults... Yeah, I get offended if someone uses 'gay' as an insult, and I call them on it!! I am not, by any stretch of the imagination, a feminine looking guy, so, over the years, the morons that thought that I MUST be str8, would occasionally use different slurs to describe someone they didn't like... They eventually stopped doing it in my company, after they were soundly chastised for their stupidity by me... Of course, I was always known as a champion of the underdog, since I was 6 or 7 years old, so, I guess that I could speak to this issue, as dangerous as it was, at the time, with some credibility, and w/o impugning my own 'reputation' in the process.
In other words, I didn't have to 'out' myself, and most guys were reluctant to go toe to toe with me, after I dangled the school bully out a second floor window by his ankles, in 4th grade... lol He lost his reputation that day, and the future bullies-in-waiting, lost their nerve, all in one fell swoop!!! lol Good times... I remember quite fondly... I know, now you think I was a bully, but I assure you, I was simply standing up for the little guy, and all the beat upon geeks!!! luv, tman<3
haha out the window? dang! haha. and i understand why people are offended, but if somone said that person looked gay as in happy would you still be offended?
I have yet to hear someone use the word 'gay' like that, except in ancient (1930s) movies, when 'gay' meant happy... Of course, if it was used in that context, as hard as that is to believe, I wouldn't take any offense at all, I mean, why would I?
Once the homosexual community adopted the word, in the 70's, I think, it was designed to be a respectful, non-clinical, way to describe a sexual orientation.... I've always cringed at the use of the word tho... I hate to be stereotyped into a group, no matter what that group is, because I have always been an individual first, and hate the broad brush treatment that goes with membership in any group!! But, whatever, it's not like I was part of that decision- I was too busy living my life at the time and trying to make my mark on the world... luv, tman<3
well if the word has addopted 3 meanings, why does only one offend you? Peace!
because that one meaning is most often used by str8 guys in an effort to taunt and denigrate gay kids!! You know, when a guy says," Man, that's SO gay!" ... like there's something bad about being gay... Sorry, I see no humor in that!! I don't tolerate people around me that are into demeaning other people.... luv, tman<3
ok, i see. i wont argue because that makes good sence.
I hate hearing "gay" being used in a derogatory way. I used to discuss it with my students when they would do it. As it turns out, a couple of them are gay (I didn't find this out until after they were out of high school and I had a different job), but they always hated it when people used the word that way. Some the clowns got it, some didn't, but at least no one had to feel bad for the 55 minutes they were working for me.
