Personally I prefer Canon, having used them for over 40 years, and now using a Rebel XTi. However, that being said, the key is to buy a decent body, and GREAT lenses. Get started with the D40 (which is a fine camera), and save for Nikon's version of Canon's "L" lenses. They're expensive, but boy are they sharper, and so much better overall in quality. I do have a near-pro friend who uses Nikon, so I know they are superb cameras. I'd also invest in a subscription to Popular Photography magazine (you can usually find a subscription card for about $15 for 2 years), and get Photoshop Elements which is an easier to use, but darn near as powerful version of Photoshop CS.
And remember, the best pictures are taken by the eye of the photographer, not the equipment he uses!

For a little over 400 bucks, you can get a CANON SX30IS camera. It's a DSLR with a non interchangeable zoom lens - BUT - the zoom range is 25MM to 580MM (35MM film size equivalent). It has a reversible and swiveling LCD screen, and a viewfinder with adjustable diopter settings (for us eyeglass wearers). It uses four regular AA size batteries, and Secure Digital memory cards. It's fully automatic everything, or fully manual everything, or anything in between. It fits in a small DSLR case, and has the most versatility of ANY DSLR out there. I know. I have its "older brother" , the SX10IS, and it is totally EPIC, man. It will cover virtually the entire range of photographic abilities that my old NIKON D70 does, without the large backpack full of lenses and accessories that I used to lug around. My still photos I took at OSHKOSH 2010 were done with the SZ10IS. I'll be uploading them soon to my FACEBOOK page. In the meantime, there's the "PDX to OSH via VAN" segment already uploaded there - taken with the CANON SX10IS.
------ take a look. See what you think

WHOA SPYS!!!
Take a look a that camera Foggy mentioned! That's a deal! The only drawback is the non-interchangeable lens, but being able to shoot full auto or anywhere in between to full manual is awesome! I wonder if it's true DSLR or if the viewfinder is an LCD screen? Foggy, can you enlighten us?
Peace <3

Yeah, it's an electronic viewfinder, but a viewfinder still. I hate holding a camera away from me, looking at a screen to compose a picture. In the sense that it doesn't have a swing-up mirror with optical viewing on a matte focusing screen - it would probably not be considered a TRUE DSLR. However, it LOOKS like a DSLR, and handles like a DSLR. There's a ton of videos on You Tube about the "Canon SX30IS". Just search for it on YouTube.
Tell ya what. I have too many cameras, anyway; and I need to "thin the herd", so to speak.
Sooo, unless you already bought a camera, I'll sell you my Canon SX10IS for a hundred and fifty bucks, plus shipping. Let me know, and I'll ship it out to you, COD. That way, you'll be assured that no one is ripping you off by having you send the money first. If you like it, send me the money via a U.S. Postal Money Order. If not, just ship it back to me within 30 days. DEAL ?

wow Foggy, im kind of honored! thank you! but, my dad told me he has a friend that just bought a new nikon DSLR and wantes to get rid of his old one and may just give it away. and besides, 150 is too cheap. i wouldent want to rip you off! but thank you!
Peace!
O darned.... Now I'm forced to continue using the Canon. O well - - - - maybe Tony, eh???
Oh, a word on Nikons.... I went to a Fred Meyer store to get a close look at the Nikon D3100 - the "latest" in their entry DSLR's. If the camera body you get does NOT have the built in motor drive for the autofocus, then all the lenses you get has to have the autofocus motor built into each lens. This is the latest version. My older {2005} D70 has the autofocus motor built into the camera body. All of my lenses will autofocus on the D70, but will only focus manually on the D3100 - BUMMER
.... So check it out. If there's a local photo shop in your area, they should stock both types of lenses; so you shouldn't have any problems obtaining the right lens for your camera.

P.S. : you can tell which is which by finding the "autofocus/manual focus" switch {MF/AF}. If it's on the camera body {like the D70}, then the motor is in the body. If the switch is on the lens, then the motor is on the lens itself.
..... I wonder what would happen if you put a "new" lens on an old camera body, and set both switches to "autofocus" ???? - - -- Snap, Crackle & Break.....???
Foggy, worth a try haha
thanks for the info! i dident know that. and i think itd be snap, crackle & blow up into a bigillion pieces
Peace!
